Play Together, Stay Together

Fill in the blank: Couples who _________ together, stay together. We've all filled in the blank, which means we've all acknowledged subconsciously a universal truth: we need to be together to stay together. This seems obvious, right? And yet, it would shock you how many times I've heard, "we just don't have anything in common", and a lot of times it's a reason people use for giving up on their marriage.

Don't get me wrong, having nothing in common with someone is a very lonely place to be, BUT you don't have to stay there. Did you know there is a website out there that lists over one THOUSAND hobbies?! If you are willing to make the time and put in the effort, you can find something to do with your spouse.

One of the main benefits of doing things together is that it allows couples to bond and connect on a deeper level. Whether it’s trying a new hobby, going on a date night, or simply spending quality time at home, shared experiences can bring couples closer together and create lasting memories.

Not only is finding a new hobby beneficial to strengthening your relationship, it can also improve your overall well-being. According to a study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, couples who engage in activities together report higher relationship satisfaction and lower levels of conflict.

In addition to the emotional benefits, there are also practical advantages to doing things together. For example, couples who work on projects or tasks together may be able to accomplish more in less time, while also learning new skills and being productive as a team.

The Bible encourages couples to prioritize their relationship with each other and to be intentional about spending time together. In Ephesians 5:31, it says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and partnership in marriage, and suggests that couples should be actively engaged in activities that bring them closer together.

While it is not necessary for couples to have every hobby in common, finding ways to connect and engage in activities together can be a valuable way to strengthen your relationship and enhance your quality of life as a couple.

Incorporating spiritual practices and values into shared activities can also be a powerful way for couples to grow together in their faith. This might include attending church together, participating in a Bible study, or volunteering as a couple at a local charity.

Overall, the benefits of doing things together with your spouse are numerous and varied. From improving communication and connection to strengthening your bond and growing in your faith, there are countless reasons to make time for shared experiences in your relationship.

5 ways to find a new hobby with your spouse:

  1. Reflect on your individual interests and passions. Think about the activities and hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment, and consider how you might be able to share those interests with your spouse.

  2. Experiment with new things together. Trying out new hobbies and activities can be a fun and exciting way to bond with your spouse. This might include taking a cooking class, trying a new sport, or exploring a new hobby.

  3. Make a list of activities you’ve always wanted to try. Think about things you’ve always been interested in but never had the chance to pursue, and consider sharing those experiences with your spouse.

  4. Find ways to incorporate your hobbies into your daily routine. Whether it’s going for a hike on the weekends or joining a local sports league, finding ways to incorporate your hobbies into your daily life can make it easier to spend time doing activities you both enjoy.

  5. Seek out opportunities for shared learning and growth. Consider taking a class or workshop together, or finding ways to engage in activities that allow you to learn and grow together. This could include volunteering, taking on a home improvement project, or even traveling to new and exciting places.
