Parent Talk is what every parent needs and wants. It is a series of classes constructed to inspire “ah ha” moments for parents.
PARENTS...
Do you know that parenting is theatre? Or that you are not one parent but three?
Do you communicate with your children well enough so you really can “Say it once”?
Have you taught your children that choices have consequences?
Do you know the biggest mistake you can make with a teenager?
These are just a few of the interesting principles you will understand and be prepared to implement after attending our Parenting Seminars!Live the Life Now Offers Parenting Seminars!
On three Tuesday evenings in March, Live the Life sponsored our first series of parenting workshops. Led by Sue Marshall Jones, a Parent Coach certified by the John Rosemond Leadership Parenting Institute, and Roshad Thomas, Student Ministry Director with Live the Life, the group learned “How to Prepare for Your Child’s Adolescence,” “The Kind of Parents Teens Really Need,” and “How to Successfully Manage Teenagers Using the Long Rope Principle.”
The sessions were interactive with Sue and Roshad explaining how to apply the principles presented to each family’s specific concerns. The parents who attended were pleased with the sensible and practical ideas presented. When asked what could be done to improve the seminars, several couples said, “Just have more of them!” So we plan to do that this fall. Stay tuned for topics and dates.
Who is John Rosemond and what does it mean to be certified by him?
John Rosemond is an internationally known parenting expert from Charlotte, NC who speaks to audiences over 200 times a year, has authored 14 books, and writes a syndicated newspaper column. He is a psychologist, but will quickly tell you that the primary credential that made him an expert at parenting was raising his own two children to become happy and successful adults.
In 1989, when Sue’s two oldest children were 4 and 6, she realized they were on their way to becoming ungrateful, disrespectful and irresponsible. Fortunately, she discovered John Rosemond a short time later and after adopting his principles, saw her children become respectful, responsible, resourceful, and just plain enjoyable to be with. She continued to study Rosemond’s philosophy until 2008 when she learned that he had formed an institute to train others to carry on his message. She applied that very day and is currently one of only 50 parent coaches in the country trained and certified by this insightful and inspiring man!
Roshad Thomas, Student Ministry Director with Live the Life, and Melanie Callaway, former Director of Children’s Ministries at Killearn United Methodist Church, are also in the process of becoming parent coaches and have begun using their many years of experience with children to advise parents regarding their individual issues.Parent Coaching or Counseling – What’s the Difference?
Parent Coaching Counseling Meets with parents only Meets with all individuals involved Assumes problems are bad habits rather than psychological issues Generally finds psychological reasons for problems Quite directive; suggests solutions and makes parents responsible for implementation Non-directive; waits for client to find answers; does not assign responsibility for implementing solutions Usually short-term with intermittent follow up Usually long-term
Parent coaches are available for one-on-one coaching sessions with parents and for seminars with schools, churches and other organizations.
